got readers?
In general, writing about writing is like dancing about rhythm.
Thus it was with some wariness that I first looked in on Zoë Westhof’s Essential Prose blog, the first of Chuck Westbrook’s project for bringing attention to lesser-known blogs around the sphere. Basically, he’s recruited a sort of traveling appreciation society, the idea being to read a “new” blog for two weeks, giving the blog some exposure, some comments, etc, and build readership for that blog.
I signed up because I get all geeked up about good writing, and I want to introduce my readers to what I consider very good blogs, or blogs that have the potential to be very good. Of course, you being one of my regular readers pretty much lands you squarely in the “not concerned with quality” camp, but what the hell, eh?
Back to Zoë, and not just because I had to look up how to make the little e with an umlaut-looking-thing, so I’m going to use it as much as possible, Zoë, and writing about writing.
Many of the advice-about-writing blogs/sites are concerned with replication, and can be boiled down to this: “Here is how I do it, and I’m great, so you should do it, too.” Or, “this is how <insert popular blogger’s name> does it, and he/she is great, so you should do it, too.”
Not so with Zoë. She has a real voice, and while she offers a few tips, the real meat of her more compelling stuff is her learning how to be a writer. I’m looking forward to seeing what else she has to say about the journey.
If you want to be a writer, if you want to be a blogger of substance, rather than someone who just wants to be Dooce or whoever other than yourself, do yourself a favor and give Zoë a hit.
